Try It Tuesday...Thanksgiving Traditions

2012 Thanksgiving morning
I love traditions and moving to Houston 4 years ago we have started some of our own for the holidays. For the past three years, we have woke up at the crack of dawn on Thanksgiving morning to run 3.1 miles. The first year I threw this on the kids at the last minute and they complained about it from the time I pulled them out of their warm beds until we started the race. Last years run went a little smoother but man was it cold. This year I gave them the option of running the 1 mile fun run/walk and was surprised when they both said 5k all the way. Yippee!

We also made the decision that turkey is really dry and steak is so much tastier!  Here's our turkey day  menu- filets, twiced baked potatoes (this is something new we're trying), green beans & rolls. Sounds good & easy right? Don't worry, I do make a pumpkin pie to keep with our childhood tradition and this year I'm also making apple crisp for the kiddos.

You won't find us shopping tomorrow night but you will find us ending the night viewing Christmas Vacation...who doesn't love watching Clark Griswold and Cousin Eddie? This is a tradition we've had for years and one that will never die.

I'm taking the rest of the week off from the blog but you can follow me on Instagram if you want to see what we're up to! Hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving and would love to know your family traditions.

Around the house...Holiday Tablescape

Holiday Tablescape

"The most wonderful time of the year" officially begins in four days and I couldn't be more excited! This time of endless preparation that culminates in wonderful gatherings of family and friends needs to be centered around a beautiful setting. With that said, I couldn't think of a more perfect time to piece together a fabulous tablescape for those special dinner occasions. My inspiration this holiday season is incorporating vintage with new and just a touch of traditional. I love the simplicity of this dining table from Modani because it gives me a clean, unfussy base with a traditional color that truly gives me endless possibilities depending on the occasion. Guest interaction is a must so I prefer keeping my centerpieces low and simple so as not to interfere with conversation. There's nothing worse than having to look around a tall arrangement to speak to the person across from you.
I love using lighted garland with a few candle votives to give warmth to the table. I'm really obsessed with gold right now, so I coupled it with just a splash of silver and a pop of color to tie everything together. These traditional plaid cloth napkins are perfect along with a vintage place card so there's no confusion on where my guests should sit. Last but not least, every meal should start with a toast in an elegant champagne flute.
How do you tablescape for the holidays? Are you looking to try something new and switching up your current style? I thought it would be fun to incorporate modern furniture for my tablescape to mix it up. I was amazed at the selection of furniture that Modani has to offer and their prices won't break the bank. It also helps that they ship nationwide if you aren't fortunate enough to have a location near you.
Happy Tablescaping!

Friday Favorites...

Casual holiday style

It's been a low key week with my kiddos being sick and home from school. I haven't had much computer time but I threw this casual holiday look together which would be perfect for Thanksgiving day. I'm not one to dress up...I prefer to be casual and comfy especially when I'm about to throw down on some good food and some buttery chard. I'm still loving distressed jeans, stripes & fringe (last post for awhile with it I promise ;) although joggers are quite the rage right now and that's one trend I don't mind. How is your stripes & fringe situation looking this fall?
Happy Friday to y'all and I plan on getting to the store today for all of my T-day groceries before next week's madhouse begins!

Around the house...Closet Organization

I had every intention of cleaning out and organizing my closet this past weekend. Once again it didn't happen and let me tell needs to happen 5-6-7-8. It's a cluttered mess and I seem to come up with a million other things that need to be done around here to avoid tackling the situation that is going on in that room...I'm sure a lot of you can relate. Before organizing begins I first need to clean it because...
I wish I had some professional organization (California Closet take me away) up in there to keep me a little more organized or a DIY project to help me out. Until then I'll keep dreaming about these closets...

Maybe I should start small with drawer organizers!

DIY Painted Coasters

'Tis the season for holiday parties, so if you're looking for the perfect hostess gift, look no further...I've got you covered. DIY painted coasters are ridiculously easy and fun to make. Put them in a drawstring bag with a bottle of wine and you're good to go. Your options are truly endless. Paint a monogram, better yet, paint any design with any color your little heart desires and you have a one of a kind homemade gift. These coasters would also make a great teacher's gift.
I found my cork coasters at Ikea but your local craft store will have them as well. I used garage sale stickers and painters tape to make my designs.
In the past I've also used letter stickers to make monogram coasters.
Make sure your stickers/tape are pressed down well so your paint will not bleed.
My daughter even wanted to get in on the fun!
I let the coasters dry for about 45 minutes to an hour. Peel your tape/stickers off slowly.
Put your coasters in a drawstring bag of your choice. I like burlap for Thanksgiving and maybe something a little fancier for the holidays.

Friday Favorites...Pinterest!

Did this week fly by as fast for you as it did for me? Can't believe it's time to say TGIF but I'm glad it's the weekend. Temperatures sure have dropped here and my body still can't get use to the colder weather...not sure that it ever will! O.k. so I've been pinning a little more on Pinterest this week. It's so full of awesomeness that sometimes I forget to pin. I just keep scrolling and dreaming...oops! Here are some of my favorites from around the web this week and you can click here to see more of my pins...
I stumbled upon Jordana Hazel's home and pretty sure I could move in tomorrow and not change a thing. I love everything about her kitchen especially her choice of ceiling fixtures.

I have mad mad love for the Glitter Guide and this chevron half moon manicure but not enough patience or time to do it myself!

Wakey Wakey have you checked out the disposable paper line Cheeky at Target? It's like TOMS shoes but these purchases provide meals for the needy.

Whish lotion makes for a great gift and guess what? It's paraben free!

If only I could talk Mark into switching out our ceiling fan for this Starburst Gold Chandelier...

Last but not least a gorgeous statement necklace for the holiday season.

Try It Tuesday...Thanksgiving Place Cards!

T-minus 16 days and counting until Thanksgiving! It's quickly becoming one of my favorite holidays and I am totally loving our new family traditions. as you may or may not know...I am now the proud owner of gold flatware and so I'm going to keep it simple with our place settings this year. There will only be four of us, but I feel like it's really important to make our table special. My mom always takes the time to arrange nice tablescapes so I feel compelled to keep it going with my family as well ;) Keep reading to see how to make an easy place card...
I don't use rosemary to cook with but I do keep it on our back patio because it is a natural mosquito repellent and I am also a big fan of its short needles and wood like stems. It is gorgeous in these white pots and so I thought...why not use a sprig of it for our place settings. The smell and pine resemblance is the perfect touch for this time of year...
If you don't have a pair of Joyce Chen scissors in your kitchen then you need to buy them here. My kitchen will never be without them. Cut your rosemary, take a decorative piece of paper that I'm sure you have around your house and use your favorite sharpie to write your names. Poke the end of rosemary through the paper and voila you have yourself a very beautiful and inexpensive place card!
I love to use chargers to add dimension; couple that with some white simple plates, a cloth napkin and a special place card and you will have a beautiful place setting for an easy and relaxing holiday!

P.S. Which flatware is out of place?

Around the house...Target for the win!

Can I just tell y'all how wonderful our weekend was? The weather was absolutely gorgeous with chilly mornings and warm days, our kiddos gave us a hall pass for date night, and most importantly Target came through with three of my favorites for around the house.
As you can tell I'm obsessing with the color gold right now. Scissors, flatware, planners...oh my! Yes, #targetdoesitagain
Nate Berkus, I've been on the hunt for these shears for weeks now. They are a hot commodity around here but I finally got lucky and grabbed a pair before everyone else did this past weekend. Ordering them online would have been just way to easy and take all of the fun out of shopping.
I've also been on the hunt for a 2015 planner since next year is already filling up. Sugar Paper came through again this year...You can't beat the price and how well it is organized.
And finally the gold flatware that I can't wait to bust out for Thanksgiving. Actually I might start using them for everyday use because I'm down to 5 spoons these days. I started with 12 and have no idea where the other seven have disappeared to. Anyway, I've been pining for these well over a year now and I finally decided to order a few sets while they were on sale. I went back and forth between these and West Elm's but I liked the shape of Target's better.
Now I just need to decide on my tablescape for Turkey Day!

Friday Favorites...

What another fun and crazy week around here. My original post for this Friday has been put on the back burner but wanted to quickly share my favorite sales going on right now and my new found love for to go coffee cups found here! Sorry Starbucks but they are cuter than yours and cheaper too ;) Anyway, back to fashion. It is so unbelievable all of the great sales going on. There are so many right now that it's the perfect time to start thinking about holiday outfits & Christmas presents. Be sure to check the current sales at Gap & Nordstrom for your favorites. I'm stocking up & hope y'all have a fantastic weekend.  TGIF!

Try It Tuesday...Beauty Products

I'm not a beauty junkie by any means but there are a few products lately that I cannot live without. I've tried for years to make the perfect cat eye but still can't seem to nail it. I love the look and this push up eye liner by Benefit makes it a little easier for me. The tip is angled so that you can get close to your lash line for an even look. Practice makes perfect or so they say...

This hydrating face spray is a limited edition, so hurry while supplies last. The rose scented spray leaves your face with a fresh, dewy look and it's so very hydrating especially for you gals up North. It's organic and I spray it on after I apply my makeup in the morning to help set my mineral powders. If you're late to the game this one is sold out, try this hydrating spray instead. Trust me, you'll be happy you have this for the winter months and yes it gets dry here in Houston as well!

Egyptian Magic is exactly that...pure magic. I use it on my feet, hands and even my face at night when it is really dry. Have a cut or burn? Heal it with this. Have eczema and are looking for a natural relief? Try it. It even works great as a makeup remover.

Around the house...

There's a chill in the air and it finally feels like fall y'all! I love to light candles...period, however there is something about this time of year that it just makes the house seem more cozy and warm. My favorite fall scent for the past couple of years has been the French Oak Scent from Restoration Hardware. I light them in different places in the house so the scent fills the air. They have several different sizes of candles, diffusers and room spray. They are a little pricey but worth the few extra dollars. Since this "tis the season to be giving", these candles make for the perfect gift this holiday season or anytime of the year!
I like to put my candles in a glass containers with dry beans for a different look.
How do you display your candles?
